With the announcement of Union Budget 2014-15, the Government of India has made it clear that it will focus on research and development (R&D) and scientific innovation in the country. According to a report by Mckinsey, it has been predicted that the Indian pharmaceutical market will grow to US$ 55 billion by 2020 from US$ 12.6 billion in 2009.

The Government of India has unveiled ‘Pharma Vision 2020’ aimed at making India a global leader in end-to-end drug manufacturing. India’s pharmaceutical exports stood at US$ 14.84 billion in FY 14. India has also been exporting medicines to around 200 countries worldwide. Out of these, the US accounts for about 25 per cent followed by the UK. The government’s decision to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) has brought in many foreign companies into the country. Also, specific clusters have been set up in various parts of the country for production as well as development of pharmaceutical products and bulk drugs.

With India’s emergence in the global pharma market, many foreign companies such as GlaxoSmithKline have set up their offices in the country. Many of the companies such as Ranbaxy, Lupin, and Sun Pharmaceuticals have their head offices in Maharashtra. Some companies such as Aurobindo Pharma and Dr Reddys Laboratories have set up their head offices in Andhra Pradesh. As such, most of their operations are concentrated in and around the south-west region of India. As a result, this has created a number of pharmaceutical jobs in Pune and its neighbouring cities.
